How can I improve the performance of my 2001 BMW 316i (e46)?
I have a 2001 BMW 316ise (e46), which is just too sluggish! How can I make it faster/ more powerful? Can I fit a turbo? Do i add performance air filters/ exhausts etc? Engine remap etc etc….I havent really got a clue what my options are. Have looked to sell it or swap for either a golf gti/ gt tdi or Audi A3/A4 turbo (petrol or diesel) but only been offered silly money.
Any help would be great. Dont really wanna spend a couple of grand though then it would simply be cheaper to buy something else.
Thanks
John
A good turbo system that won’t fall apart of melt your pistons will cost you about $5000+. Air filters and exhaust really don’t do much for performance, although some people will swear otherwise. You might see 10 hp at the crank, which translates to maybe 1 hp at the wheels – which you won’t notice. You could chip the engine, but that wouldn’t be a huge improvement either. Trouble is, it’s a small N/A engine that wasn’t designed for blistering performance. If you’re not comfortable spending a few thousand dollars, I wouldn’t really bother with it. Enjoy the handling, who cares how fast you get there.
